A steep slope with splendid views across parkland and the Yarra Valley allow this residence to open up towards the north and east capturing views with great solar access.
Utilising the site’s typography and existing retaining walls, the new building cements itself within its environment, cutting into the slope. The entry and internal stair become the pivoting point and the breaking point of the architectural form. The building makes use of the large eave overhang to the north to provide sun shading inside and out, and balance against the robust vertical forms to the south.
Consultation with an Environmental Consultant throughout the design process integrated many environmental aspects including solar boosted hot water and heating, solar electrical generation, rain water harvesting and natural ventilation systems. Rammed earth and concrete floors provide thermal mass to stabilise the internal temperatures.
